After Tapan, Rina’s sweetheart, elopes with her best friend, Juhi, she marries Romoni Rai, Juhi’s older brother. The Rais move to Romoni’s home town, where he has a massive orchard, in the centre of which is an imposing white Mansion, The Rai Mansion. Now, the train that carried Rina and Romoni, also ferried another VIP couple, Walter Hemming The Collector and his wife Margaret Hemming. The Rais and Hemmings become close friends, indeed Margaret becomes Rina’s new best friend. They immediately set out to establish an outreach for Women called Global Women’s Union (GWU) with it’s HQ in West Virginia, USA. With help from Margaret, Rina dives headlong into the work of bettering Women’s lot in the Province.A month later, Rina, while taking a walk in her Orchard, chances upon a mob of marauders, chasing a hapless couple, Zubaida and Sameer, intent upon hacking them to death with axes, manchettes and swords. Rina, at once places herself in between the mob and its quarry. A bloodletting scuffle follows but Rina does not let the mob touch the couple. Walter Hemming, who was passing by, discharges his slide action shotgun in air, and scares the mob away. The ringleader Horhe Holder and his sidekick Zakir are arrested and jailed.Several months later, Rina and Margaret are out on a picnic near a lake. They are suddenly accosted by 75-year-old Nimesh Holder, Horhe’s father, who, in his youth was a seven-time boxing champion. Rina is severely beaten, almost raped and killed, but is saved by Gorkha, Jung Bahadur Gurung. Nimesh joins his son Horhe in Jail.After a long struggle with her near-fatal injuries, Rina recovers. She is about to resume her charity work, when she learns that the Holder women (with no male left in the family) are in a bad way. They are not just starving but are ostracised by the Province. Rina’s heart melts at the plight of these innocent women, and the charitable person in her (as the head of GWU in her Province) faces a life defining question. Should she lie in court to set the culprits free; or should she make an example of these ruthless marauders?
